CUGINO Soft was born from a simple question: how do we preserve the integrity of the original CUGINO stool while responding to the realities of today’s timber supply?

In a weekly call with Cristina Salvati, Global Sales and Marketing Director at Mattiazzi, she explained that high‑quality oak has become increasingly difficult to source. Supply has tightened due to global instability, including the war in Ukraine, growing competition and a more protective market economy. Prices have risen sharply and availability has decreased.

The original CUGINO is made from thick, solid oak. Its character and beauty come directly from the quality of the wood. To maintain this level of craftsmanship without compromise, we accepted longer lead times and higher production costs. That decision opened the door to a new idea. What if we created a second version of CUGINO, not as a replacement, but as its own independent piece with different attributes?

CUGINO Soft uses construction timber, the same material used for roof trusses. It is spruce: lighter in weight, pale in tone and very different from oak. It is also fast growing, locally sourced and more economical. The geometry of CUGINO Soft mirrors the original, but the round seat is finished with coloured linoleum, giving it a fresh expression. Some will see it as a side table, others as a stool. Both are true.

CUGINO Soft shares the spirit of the original, but stands confidently as its own piece.

“Cugino is the result of many tries; it happened over time, with wanting it to be an object that we don’t already know, but also something that is maybe a little bit familiar.“
